  2. Fix File Extensions Windows 7

Restore default file association on Windows 7 Original title:open with defaults when changing a file to open with windows photo viewer it some how chaged all files on my computer to open with photo viewer there are no restore points nor backups is there a way to undo this or fix it. If you find that you cannot open a particular file type, then our File Association Fixer v2 for Windows 10/8/7 will be able to easily help you fix, repair and restore the broken file associations.

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

The downloads below will allow you to restore the Windows 7 default registry entries and program associations of the selected file extension type.
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.
Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.
If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.
These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

For Windows 10, please see hereRestore Exe File Association Windows 7File - Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
Here's How:
1. Click on a listed file extension below the blue NOTE box that you would like to restore the default associations of. This will be for the downloadable .reg file for the listed file extension.
2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.
3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file, and click on Merge.
NOTE:If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The 'Edit' function just opens them in Notepad.
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:Windowsregedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.
4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE:If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.
5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .zip or .reg files on the desktop if you like.
6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.
Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
To download all available file extension fixes below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

I recently downloaded an ASP.NET project, which was a self-extracting zip file. I right-clicked the file and chose Open With → Microsoft Visual Studio. Now apparently it unzipped and set the default program for all .exe files to Visual Studio.

How can I fix the .exe file extension so it is not associated with Visual Studio?

You can fix it by taking a look at this Microsoft page: KB950505.

There is a 'Fix it for me' program linked from the page. Alternatively, you can manually follow these directions:

Because you cannot open .exe files normally (this also happens with certain viral infections), you have to use a roundabout way to make the necessary changes.

  1. Open Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL)

  2. Press and hold CTRL and click File - New Task (Run...). This will open a Command window.

  3. Type 'notepad' and press Enter. This will open Notepad.

  4. Paste the following text into the Notepad window:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.exe]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.exe]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.exeOpenWithList]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.exeOpenWithProgids]'exefile'=hex(0):

  5. Click File - Save As.... Set the file type to All Files, name the file 'fix.reg', and set Encoding to 'Unicode'. Remember where you've saved it.

  6. In the command window, navigate to where you saved fix.reg and type 'reg import fix.reg'

  7. Click Yes and OK to any prompts.

  8. Reboot your computer.

Note: I had issues pasting the specified text for the registry import. If the above text doesn't work, go to the KB article linked above and paste from there.
