“Coldplay” is a famous four-member alternative rock band of British origin, which got their music industry breakthrough in 1996. The members of the group are Chris Martin who is the lead vocalist, Jonny Buckland the lead guitarist, Will Champion a backing vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and drummer alongside Guy Berryman who is on bass.
The band was named in 1998 before the release of the singles “Brothers& Sisters,” “Safety” and “The Blue Room” were being recorded and released. After signing a contract with Parlophone, the group dedicated themselves to achieving worldwide recognition. The release of the single “Yellow” in 2000 followed by “Parachutes,” their debut album later that year with Parlophone was nominated for the Mercury Prize. They had found their fame. Coldplay released their second album in 2002; “A Rush of Blood to the Head” which was reviewed favorably and won numerous awards including the NME album of the year and stands as the best Nelson-produced Coldplay album. The next release in 2005, “X&Y” received mixed reviews but were generally positive and in favor of the band.
Increasingly, the albums gained prominence all over the world especially the fourth studio album, which was released in 2008 and produced by Brian Eno called “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” was positively received and went on to earn a number of Grammy nominations and wins. Throughout its history, “Coldplay” has received various music awards, which includes seven Grammy Awards out of twenty nominations, six Brit Awards along with four MTV Video Music Awards. The band was nominated numerous times, but 2009 is considered the most prosperous as the band won three Grammy Awards at the 51st Grammy Awards from the seven nominations earned. “Coldplay” was honored as one of the best selling music artist in the world, selling over 50 million records around the globe. The group is well known for their performances at “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief,” “Band Aid 20,” “Teenage Cancer Trust,” “Sound Relief” and “Live 8.” Coldplay actually released three EPs without having a hit release success until “Shiver” and “Parachutes” in March of 2000 that peaked at number 35 on the Top 40 on the Singles Chart for the United Kingdom.
“Coldplay” made an histoy in June 2000; where the band got their first headline tour along with an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival. “Yellow” was an epithetical single which gained a number four spot in the Top 5 hits on the Singles chart for the UK. In spring of 2000 “Shiver” and “Yellow” were originally released as EPs. Coldplay progressed through the music industry and gained recognition on the UK Albums Chart with the album “Parachutes.” Since its initial release in 2000, the album has been converted in to multiple formats. “Trouble,” the third single on the album had a limited edition CD featuring “Yellow” as a remix. “Trouble” alongside “Yellow” got favorable airplay in the United States and the United Kingdom. After gaining favor in Europe, Coldplay proceeded to North American, hosting a U.S. Club tour in February of 2001. “Parachutes” was identified as a double platinum record, and honored as “Best Alternative Music Album” at the 2002 Grammy Awards. After acquiring great success with the album “Parachutes,” the group released their second studio album called “A Rush of Blood to the Head” which also gained global respect from critics and appreciation from fans. The album contained over 20 songs including the singles “In My Place,” and “Animal” entertained a live audience while they were on the Parachutes Tour. The album was released in 2002 contained with singles such as “Clocks,” “The Scientist” and “In My Place” demonstrating their prominence and dominance in the business.
The band was also recognized as the best band and artist in December of 2003 by the Rolling Stone magazine. Coldplay was the idolized group by the year 2004 gaining favorable ratings, while being highlighted for their talent worldwide, the video “The Nappies” was also released during their recordings for the third album. “X&Y” made over 8.3 million dollars in sales worldwide and was rated the best selling album for the year 2005. The lead single for the album was “Speed of Sound” rated number one in 20 countries worldwide after its release on May 23, 2005 and was identified as the third most popular selling album in the history of the UK Charts. The single “Fix You” was released in September along with “Talk,” which hit the shelves in December. Brian Eno also produced Coldplay’s fourth studio album known as “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” in the year 2006. The album consisted of “Violet Hill,” later confirmed as the first single for the album and was released on the radio on the 29th of April 2008.
Coldplay also received a total of two Grammy Awards for the song “If I could Fly” featured on the album called “Is There Love in Space? released in 2004. Coldplay was also awarded at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2008 for Best Rock Album in collaboration with “Viva la or Death and All His Friends,”“Viva la Vida” as the Song of the Year and Best Vocal Pop Performance by a group or duo for “Viva la Vida.”
Currently the group is working on their fifth album, which is almost complete and untitled as declared in their online blog on Coldplay’s official website. During an interview hosted on January 13, 2011, the group elaborated on two of the singles contained in the upcoming album with the song titles “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” and “Princess of China.”
