All Of My Love Song
“All My Love” is one of the rare collaborative efforts between Robert Plant (vocals) and John Paul Jones (bass/keyboards). Jones’ lilting and fluid keyboard inflections are prominently displayed throughout the song, offering an interesting contrast from the typically aggressive and heavily amplified metallic rock normally associated with Led Zep. In fact many MOR radio stations actually began playing “All Of My Love” along side concurrent hits from the likes of Barry Manilow and Air Supply. As disparate as that might sound, the band turn in a well proportioned rendering that focuses on their respective abilities as an ensemble -- rather than a group of collective soloists. Jimmy Page (guitar) trades leads with Plant in an almost subliminal fashion. This directly contrasts their earlier and decidedly rowdier interplay on tracks such as “Dazed and Confused”. Yet, it remains at the heart of their teamwork. A careful examination reveals Page’s responses and embellishments behind Plant’s vocals. Their equality can be traced to Page’s undoubtedly intentional restraint throughout the opening. Rather than solo, he simply and eloquently introduces Plant with a single flourish. He alternates a liquefied slide inflection with a staccato and percussive scratching. The guitarist’s achingly poignant contributions reflect the often dismissed depth within later era Led Zep. Likewise, John Bonham’s (drums) moderated efforts are decidedly out of character. Even the goth rock precursor “No Quarter” included prominent tympani bombast along side his otherwise quartz movement accuracy and timing. Plant’s lyrics are both emotive and seemingly heartfelt. However, his delivery is beginning to show tell tale signs of age. Although he had retired his perfect pitch wailing, the slightly huskier and more throaty intonations fit material from the band’s swan song -- such as “Carouselambra” and the impending bluesy “I’m Gonna Crawl”. “All Of My Love” was among the tracks that Led Zep did perform from In Through The Out Door during their 1980 European tour -- which turned out to be their final series of live gigs prior to the passing of Bonham.
